We have seen Directories. Most are set up by SEO firms to do nothing but to create backlinks. Every directory structure is the same, and the SEO firms charge their clients for putting listings in each others directories. Do users look at the directories? No. Does their Page Rank or Alexa rating mean anything? No!
The only way you can measure a Directory is if it drives traffic to your site, and you can see how effective it is for you. However, this is not a one-way arrangement!
If you want a directory listing to work for you, you must make the effort to help drive traffic to the directory, and the only way is to help make the directory content-rich.
We have seen free blog sites. Most want you to buy something from them, and you may find yourself eventually paying for your blog, one way or another. Our free blogging is an effort to attract the traffic that will translate into more traffic to your blog. We will never charge you for any regular service in that regard.
We also have used a slightly different method a categorization, more along the lines of free-tagging, and our directory structure is not a mirror of the DMOZ categories. Yes, SEO's are able to submit listings to this site. However, each listing is managed by one user, and each user gets one listing. Each account requires a unique email address, and it must be confirmed. Makes it rather difficult for a spammer to submit a lot of listngs :-) We have no problem if you wish to create multiple user accounts and submit multiple blog listings, but we do not want to harm the quality of the information we provide to the user.
